Keratoconus is a corneal condition that may require the use of special contact lenses for visual correction. Our practice has been at the forefront in the field of keratoconus research and clinical care. We developed the currently preferred method for fitting rigid contact lenses for keratoconus. This research led to the funding of a multi-million dollar study of fitting techniques for keratoconus by the National Eye Institute. Our research helped to establish the relationship between eye rubbing and keratoconus.

Recent advances in lens materials and designs allow greater success in fitting patients with keratoconus. Contact lenses for this condition are custom-fitted, not utilizing standard designs. Multiple visits, including some of extended duration, are required for optimal results.

Current techniques for fitting keratoconus lenses include the following:

  1. Custom Hydrogel (soft)
  2. RGP (rigid gas permeable lenses)
  3. Piggyback (soft lenses with RGP on top)
  4. Hybrid (combination of RGP and Hydrogel)
  5. Scleral (RGP lenses which totally cover the corneas and extend onto the white of the eye)
